About

Hi, I’m Mike Pyeweed

I started homesteading about a year ago, and writing about it on HomesteadEarth.com. It seems that most of what I’ve been doing is building infrastructure, like a chicken coop and run, planting perennial native and fruit trees, and putting up fences and gates to keep everything safe. Finally, the eggs have started to roll in, and there should be many fruits this spring. I got into native plants by way of permaculture, so my favorite natives are fruit bearing – like elderberries, serviceberries, wild farkleberries (a variety of blueberry with a funny name), persimmons, and pawpaws.

I decided to make coloring books about Native Plants, and I thought by making these coloring books I could better identify plants in my yard. Then, I learned that “Save The Bees” didn’t necessarily mean honey bees, and more broadly means that native bee populations are in serious decline, in large part due to pesticide use and lack of host plants. And honestly, that little fact got to me. I had been gardening for about 8 years, and in all that time I had never even known the true meaning behind the phrase.

I also started UnicornColoringShirts.com to make coloring shirts more of a “thing”- because as much as my kids like plants, they love unicorns.
